A newly established task force now works in collaboration with the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) and the Sri Lanka Computer Emergency Readiness Team (SLCERT) to detect unauthorized gambling platforms and prevent them from operating within the country’s digital space.
This effort includes the use of digital surveillance software, keyword tracking, and artificial intelligence to monitor search patterns, ad placements, and app stores for suspicious gambling-related activity. Authorities are also working with local internet service providers (ISPs) to block access to identified platforms and prevent them from reaching Sri Lankan audiences.
Furthermore, the government is reviewing existing regulations to include specific provisions against online slot machines, which were previously not adequately addressed in national legislation. The proposed amendments aim to categorize online slot operations as criminal offenses, holding both operators and enablers accountable.

Recognizing that most illegal gambling platforms are hosted abroad, Sri Lanka has also sought help from international partners to assist in its enforcement efforts. The country is engaging with global internet platforms such as Google, Facebook, and Apple to report and request removal of gambling content that violates Sri Lankan laws.
Moreover, Sri Lanka is participating in dialogues with the Asia/Pacific Group on Money Laundering (APGML) to explore ways to monitor the financial channels used by illegal gambling websites, especially those operating through cryptocurrency and international e-payment systems. These partnerships are essential in tracking the digital footprints of gambling operators and dismantling their infrastructure at a global level.
Education and Awareness as Prevention Tools
While enforcement is critical, Sri Lankan officials acknowledge that raising public awareness is equally important. The government has launched an awareness campaign to inform citizens, particularly parents and young adults, about the risks of online gambling and how to identify illegal platforms.
This campaign includes television segments, school-based education programs, and social media messaging to promote digital literacy and responsible internet use. The focus is on helping users distinguish between legal entertainment and illegal gambling disguised as mobile games or rewards-based apps.
Mental health experts are also being engaged to support individuals who may already be affected by gambling addiction, with plans to set up dedicated counseling lines and referral centers in partnership with local NGOs.
Balancing Technology and Regulation
Sri Lanka’s approach to online gambling reflects a broader global challenge: balancing the benefits of digital technology with the risks of misuse. While the internet has enabled greater connectivity and innovation, it has also opened the door to behaviors that are difficult to regulate across borders.
Government officials emphasize that their intent is not to suppress technological progress, but to ensure that digital tools are used responsibly and lawfully. Regulations are being crafted to target the misuse of digital platforms rather than restrict access to technology itself. Legal experts and civil society organizations are also being consulted to ensure the framework remains fair, transparent, and consistent with international standards.
